Infection Control

Infection control is a set of recommended safety precautions that dentists put in place to protect patients and their staff. Many dental procedures involve direct contact with blood and saliva. Strict infection control helps to stop the spread of disease. Improved infection control procedures call for most of the instruments and supplies that your dentist uses to be either heat-sterilized or disposable.  Here at Nelsen Family Dentistry, we use the same strict protocols that is used in hospitals.  We are uncompromising about protecting you, our patients, as well as ourselves.

Periodontal Therapy (Gum Disease)
Periodontal disease or gum disease is primarily caused by dangerous flesh and bone eating bacterial plaque. Factors like genetics, tobacco and certain medical conditions like diabetes are also known to contributing to the disease process.

Periodontal disease is usually painless and can go undetected until it is too late and teeth are lost. 75 to 85% of the population will get periodontal disease at some point in their lifetime. The initial symptoms are bleeding gums and bad breath however most have no symptoms at all. Periodontal disease is also associated with other life threatening conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Individuals with Periodontal disease are ten times more likely to have a heart attack.

Our highly trained dental hygienists can perform non-surgical periodontal therapy on patients diagnosed with early periodontal disease. The procedure is called scaling and root planning. In some cases medications are also used to assist in the healing of diseased periodontal tissue. Periodic maintenance appointments are scheduled until optimum periodontal health is achieved.

Continuing Care: Child’s First Visit

At Nelsen Family Dentistry, we believe healthy smiles for life begin with your child’s very first visit. It is so important that children have a good experience in the dental office to prevent unnecessary fear of the dentist. That’s why the youngest of our patients come in for a “Happy Visit”  At your child’s first Happy Visit we will let them ride in the chair on the parents lap, by themselves, or with a big brother or sister. Depending on the temperament of the child we will count their teeth and introduce them to common dental tools such as the suction or more affectionately known as “Mr. Thirsty.”  Our goal for this visit is for them to be happy and have a great first trip to the dentist.
